About Our Fly Fishing Tours

I gifted my husband a fly fishing lesson with Gordon Vanderpool of Turning Stone’s Fly Fishing. He had a fantastic weekend and learned a great deal about the sport. Plus, on his first excursion, he caught well over 40 fish! They provided all of the necessary equipment and taught him a lot about future fishing techniques. Whether you're new to fly fishing or want to improve your abilities, I recommend arranging a trip with them!

East Fork of the French Broad River

French Broad River Turning Stones Fly Fishing 9228

The East Fork of the French Broad is a brilliant example of what public access to private trout waters can look like. While it’s true that it’s private property along the banks of this area, you’ll notice the small signs that say, “Public Access for Fishing Only.” This is a delicate arrangement with local landowners that needs to be respected in order to continue.

This medium to large flow creek is heavily stocked with trout, and is one of the most popular delayed harvest streams in the area. Running roadside, it features easy access and easy wading, which is partly what makes it so popular.

You’ll have moments to yourself during tougher weather and weekdays, but plan on sharing company during delayed harvest season, October into June. Because of this, these trout see a lot of flies and be rather particular.

The East Fork of the French Broad employs catch and release regulations from October to May. Additionally, only artificial lures and single-hooks are allowed.

The creek is exceptionally beautiful and is typical of a lower elevation trout stream, with long slow runs, extended stretches of shallow riffles, and big bend pools. The East Fork of the French Broad is near Rosman, Cashiers, Highlands, and pulls folks up from places such as Travelers Rest down in South Carolina as well.

Be aware of where you go: not all of this water is accessible to the public. Only about five miles is managed as delayed harvest. You’ll note several posted parcels that you’ll need to avoid.

Backcountry Trout

Back Country Turning Stone

All of the guides here at Turning Stones Fly Fishing live for fishing backcountry locations!  As I touch on this style of fishing I will not disclose any names or locations of the streams, this is strictly done to protect the true wild nature of their setting.

With that being said, western North Carolina has hundreds upon hundreds of miles of truly wild trout water.  There’s a wide variety available, from high altitude native brook trout, to streams holding wild brown and rainbow trout. Some are right along the road, while others are miles off of the beaten path and seldom fly fished.

Our guides all have a soft spot for this type of fishing and know plenty of great spots to get away from the crowds. When you take one of these guided fly fishing trips you need to know that most of the fish will be small, in the 6- to 12-inch range. The trophy is not the size here, it is knowing that you fooled a fish on the fly that has probably never seen the human hand -- and that is worth its weight in gold.

These are some of the most beautiful fish you will ever see here in western North Carolina. The colors will be perfect little examples of what these three trout species really should look like.

Even though these fish are wild and not easy to catch, this trip can be for any age or skill level.  However, I do recommend it for those who are physically fit due to the strong possibility you will be hiking over rough terrain at times.

It does not matter where you will be staying; just know that there will always be wild trout opportunities within minutes of Franklin, Cherokee, Highlands, Cashiers, Scaly Mountain, Clayton Georgia, Dillard Georgia, Sky Valley Georgia, Dillsboro, Sylva, Bryson City, Whittier, and Nantahala!

We hope you choose wild fish the next time you book. I promise you will be happy that you did!!

The Nantahala River

Nantahala River Turning Stones Fly Fishing 01 Lower Nantahala River Turning Stones Fly Fishing Upper Nantahala River Turning Stones Fly Fishing

The Nantahala River is an excellent classroom for beginners.

There are 2 main sections of the river. These 2 sections are separated by a power plant. Above the power plant there are numerous stocked fish at certain times of the year, and a plentiful amount of wild fish year round.

The upper river is under delayed harvest regulations. That means that from the first of October through the first Saturday of June it’s catch and release, single-hook artificial only! At the powerhouse, a large pipe brings water down from Nantahala Lake. This is a tailwater, so the water is very cold year round, which is wonderful for excellent populations of wild fish. This section holds the current North Carolina state record brown trout at a whopping 24 lbs. 10 ounces!! This section is one of the most technical rivers in the area, and the wild rainbows are some of the most beautiful fish anywhere around.

While fishing here you will enjoy being surrounded by the steep mountain terrain of the Nantahala Gorge. It is a wonderful setting and one of the prettiest rivers that we fish.

We would be happy to take you on a guided fly fishing trip to this river. It is located near the towns of Murphy, Hayesville, Andrews, Topton, Franklin, Bryson City, Robinsville, Cherokee, and Whittier. The close counties to the Nantahala River are Clay, Macon, Jackson, Swain, and Graham.
