French Broad River Turning Stones Fly Fishing 9228

The East Fork of the French Broad is a brilliant example of what public access to private trout waters can look like. While it’s true that it’s private property along the banks of this area, you’ll notice the small signs that say, “Public Access for Fishing Only.” This is a delicate arrangement with local landowners that needs to be respected in order to continue.

This medium to large flow creek is heavily stocked with trout, and is one of the most popular delayed harvest streams in the area. Running roadside, it features easy access and easy wading, which is partly what makes it so popular.

You’ll have moments to yourself during tougher weather and weekdays, but plan on sharing company during delayed harvest season, October into June. Because of this, these trout see a lot of flies and be rather particular.

The East Fork of the French Broad employs catch and release regulations from October to May. Additionally, only artificial lures and single-hooks are allowed.

The creek is exceptionally beautiful and is typical of a lower elevation trout stream, with long slow runs, extended stretches of shallow riffles, and big bend pools. The East Fork of the French Broad is near Rosman, Cashiers, Highlands, and pulls folks up from places such as Travelers Rest down in South Carolina as well.

Be aware of where you go: not all of this water is accessible to the public. Only about five miles is managed as delayed harvest. You’ll note several posted parcels that you’ll need to avoid.

What People Are Saying
About Our Fly Fishing Tours

I gifted my husband a fly fishing lesson with Gordon Vanderpool of Turning Stone’s Fly Fishing. He had a fantastic weekend and learned a great deal about the sport. Plus, on his first excursion, he caught well over 40 fish! They provided all of the necessary equipment and taught him a lot about future fishing techniques. Whether you're new to fly fishing or want to improve your abilities, I recommend arranging a trip with them!
