Gordon began fly fishing as a teenager in southwestern Pennsylvania, where he was raised. He has snagged great catches from as far away as Nevada, California, and Belize. However, he and his wife decided to settle in western North Carolina, where they started Turning Stones. Gordon is a Certified Casting Instructor for the Federation of Fly Fishers and the Southeastern Coach of the USA Youth Fly Fishing Team.
The simple Mcfly foam egg is a must fly pattern for the fly tyer to have in his or her box. This is definitely a good fly to know how to tie. It's a deadly fly pattern when used at the right place and at the right time! One of my favorite simple flies to tie and use here in the Smoky Mountains of western North Carolina! Remember, there is usually a fish of some kind spawning most of the season. Don't miss out on the Mcfly Foam EGG!!!!
The Maypalm Pheasant Tail nymph jig is an attractor pattern I like to fish a lot when the caddis are moving around. This fly pattern is also a good imitation of some larger mayflies when tied with a tail. Mix it up with this fly pattern. Some with a tail, some without. Enjoy!
This fly pattern is a multi-purpose fly if you will. I use it when I see Blue Winged Olive's, Trico's, and other small mayflies hatching. Also, due to its slender body, it works well for a midge. When tying the midge I'll keep it on the small side. This fly has been a great Baetis-Midge pattern for me for a long time. Enjoy!
Im Gordon Vanderpool owner of Turning Stone Fly Fishing in Western North Carolina. This fly is called the "surveyor". Its a fly pattern made popular in competition fly fishing, and was developed by Lance Egan, member of The USA Mens Fly Fishing Team. The original pattern was a bit different then this one. This is my variation of it. Ive used it successfully all over the USA. Its a confidence fly pattern for me and sees a lot of time on the end of my line. This is also a very easy fly pattern to learn to tie!
